Many animals have superior night vision color perception compared to humans, thanks to specialized eye adaptations:
- Cats and dogs have a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum that enhances night vision
- Owls have extremely large eyes and specialized rod cells for enhanced night vision
- Deep-sea creatures can often detect bioluminescent colors in complete darkness
While humans lose most color vision in low light conditions (relying primarily on rod cells that don’t process color), many nocturnal animals maintain some color perception ability. This is because their eyes have either more sensitive cone cells or a higher ratio of rod cells, allowing them to gather more light and process color information even in dim conditions.
