Many animals have superior night vision color perception compared to humans, thanks to specialized adaptations:
- Cats and dogs have a reflective layer called the tapetum lucidum that enhances night vision
- Owls have extremely large eyes with more rod cells for enhanced night vision
- Deep-sea creatures often have specialized color vision adapted to the dark depths
While humans lose most color vision in low light conditions (switching to rod cells which don’t process color), many nocturnal animals maintain some color perception. This is because their eyes have:
- Higher concentration of rod cells
- Larger pupils for gathering more light
- More sensitive color receptors
