Diet plays a crucial role in bird feather coloration, particularly for colors derived from carotenoid pigments. Birds cannot produce these pigments themselves and must obtain them through their diet. Common sources include:

  • Berries and fruits
  • Insects and other small prey
  • Seeds and plants

Environmental factors also impact feather color intensity. Strong sunlight can fade feathers over time, while pollution can affect the development of both pigment-based and structural colors. Flamingos are a classic example – their pink coloration comes directly from carotenoids in the algae and small crustaceans they eat. Without these dietary sources, they would appear much paler.
