Environmental factors can significantly impact feather coloration in several ways:
- Diet affects carotenoid-based colors (yellows, oranges, reds)
- Sun exposure can fade feathers over time
- Pollution and oil can damage feather structure
- Wear and tear can alter structural colors
Diet is particularly important for birds with carotenoid-based colors, as these pigments must be obtained from food. For example, flamingos get their pink coloration from carotenoids in the algae and small crustaceans they eat. Without these dietary sources, their feathers would be much paler.
Additionally, birds in urban environments may show duller colors due to pollution affecting their feathers, while excessive sun exposure can bleach feathers, particularly affecting darker colors.
