Insect camouflage works through several sophisticated mechanisms:
- Background matching – Insects match the color and pattern of their surroundings
- Disruptive coloration – Patterns break up the insect’s outline
- Countershading – Darker upper surfaces and lighter undersides reduce apparent depth
Many insects can actively change their coloration based on their environment. For example, stick insects can adjust their color over several days to match the branches they rest on. Some caterpillars can alter their appearance based on their diet. This adaptive camouflage helps them avoid detection by predators through both color matching and pattern mimicry of their preferred habitat.
