Color processing is a complex interaction between our eyes and brain. The process begins when light hits specialized photoreceptors (cones) in our retina, triggering chemical reactions that send signals to the brain. The brain then:
- Processes these signals in the visual cortex
- Compares incoming information with stored memories
- Adjusts for lighting conditions
- Creates our conscious experience of color
Interestingly, color perception is not just physical but also influenced by psychological factors. The same color can appear different depending on surrounding colors (color contrast) and lighting conditions (color constancy). This is why optical illusions can trick our color perception by manipulating these neural processes.
