Color processing in the human brain is a complex process involving multiple stages:
- Light enters the eye and stimulates cone cells in the retina
- Signals travel through the optic nerve to the lateral geniculate nucleus
- Information reaches the primary visual cortex for initial processing
- The V4 region of the brain specifically processes color
The brain combines this information with memory and context to create our perception of color. Interestingly, color perception can be influenced by surrounding colors, lighting conditions, and even emotional state. This is why optical illusions can trick our color perception and why we can recognize colors under different lighting conditions (color constancy).
