The vibrant colors of sunsets are caused by a combination of atmospheric effects. During sunset, sunlight must travel through more atmosphere to reach our eyes than during midday. This longer path means:
- Blue light gets scattered away more completely
- Red and orange wavelengths pass through more directly
- Particles and pollution can enhance the effect
Additionally, the phenomenon of atmospheric refraction bends the sunlight, creating longer-lasting sunset colors. The most spectacular sunsets often occur when there are high-altitude clouds to reflect these warm colors and when there are small particles in the air from natural sources like volcanic eruptions or dust.
