The beautiful colors of sunrise and sunset are caused by a process called atmospheric scattering combined with the longer path sunlight must travel through the atmosphere. During these times:
- Sunlight travels through more atmosphere to reach our eyes
- Blue light gets scattered away more extensively
- Red and orange wavelengths pass through more directly
- Particles in the air can enhance these effects
Additional factors that influence sunset colors include:dust, pollution, water vapor, and clouds. Cleaner air typically produces more vibrant reds, while particulate matter can create more muted oranges and purples. This is why volcanic eruptions and wildfires can sometimes lead to particularly spectacular sunsets.
