Visibility of colors changes dramatically with depth:
- 0-15 feet: All colors visible, but reds begin to fade
- 15-30 feet: Blues and greens dominate, reds appear gray or black
- 30-60 feet: Primarily blue-green spectrum remains
- Below 60 feet: Mostly blue light penetrates
This color absorption pattern is why safety equipment and dive gear often use fluorescent yellow or lime green colors, as these remain visible at greater depths. For maximum visibility underwater, bright whites, fluorescent yellows, and light blues are most effective. This knowledge is crucial for diving safety, underwater signaling, and marine photography.
