Humans cannot see ultraviolet light because our eye’s lens blocks most UV radiation to protect our retina from damage. However, some animals, like bees and birds, have evolved to see UV light because it provides crucial survival advantages:
- Helps identify nectar patterns in flowers
- Aids in finding prey
- Assists with mate selection
Interestingly, humans who have had their eye’s natural lens removed (aphakia) can perceive some UV light, appearing as a bluish-white color. This demonstrates that our retinas can actually detect UV light, but the lens normally filters it out as a protective mechanism.
