This phenomenon, known as bioluminescence, occurs when microscopic organisms called dinoflagellates emit light through a chemical reaction. These marine organisms produce light when disturbed, creating a stunning blue glow in the water.
The process involves two chemicals:
- Luciferin (the light-emitting compound)
- Luciferase (the enzyme that triggers the reaction)
This natural light show is most visible during red tides or in warm coastal waters with high concentrations of these organisms. The blue glow can be seen when waves crash, boats move through the water, or swimmers create movement. The best viewing conditions are on dark nights with minimal light pollution, typically during summer months in tropical and subtropical regions.
